Twice a year for twenty-one years, a dwarf has brought Phoenix a letter from a man who died before he was born. Forty-five letters, and he knows them by heart. So a smith’s apprentice goes looking for who the man was. Please note: this book is only available in PDF format.

What's this?

Phoenix is twenty-one and apprenticed to the blacksmith who raised him, in the market town of Cadder. Twice a year a dwarf named Dun has come up the road with a letter from a man who died before Phoenix was born: practical, funny advice on knots and boots and how to tell when somebody is lying to you. Forty-five of them. He knows them by heart.

Then one comes early, and tells him something about his own body that nobody living has ever mentioned. Somebody watched him sleep, and that somebody died before he was born.

So he goes looking, with paper and strangers: toll books, ledgers and four hundred miles of road. The man's name shuts faces. And along that road, people are missing time (an afternoon, nineteen days, most of a year) and none of them know it.

A quiet, dry, concrete literary fantasy for readers of Piranesi and The Buried Giant.

V.R. Pfalt lives in Arizona and works in the automotive industry. Razed Phoenix is his first novel, set about as far from both as a book can get: a cold valley and a blacksmith's forge. He is at work on a second book.
