A three-part novel series about a woman who jeopardizes her engagement when she falls in love with the man who helps her abet her sister’s elopement, Catherine, Volume I follows as she begins to doubt the mutual understanding she always depended on between her and her fiancé when he unexpectedly supports her sister’s arranged marriage to a man she doesn’t love.

What's this?

Placed with her uncle’s family upon the death of her mother, Cassandra Ellis struggles to conform to her aunt’s idea of how she should comport herself, until her secret engagement to her cousin, Edward Maitland, gives her not only a crucial ally growing up, but the prospect of a way out. But when her aunt arranges her sister’s engagement to the wealthy, unctuous Robert Granville, Cassandra’s opposition to marrying without love puts her in direct contention with Edward, who approves the material advantage of the match – a dynamic made more difficult by the attentions of James Thackeray, a guest of the Maitlands, whose liberality seems to answer her expectations more completely than her beloved Edward’s growing conventionality.

A note on the text: This novel is written in the literary style in which it’s story is set (i.e. Jane Austen’s Regency England), meaning that much of its spelling and punctuation is archaic, its syntax is elaborate, and its word choice is period accurate.

J. Marie Jackson read her first Austen when she still had to look the big words up in the dictionary. A logophile from early on, she loves prose that makes you work for it, and thinks there are few things more beautiful than a properly constructed sentence. She dropped out of the University of California, Riverside, Master of Fine Arts program for Creative Writing when they wouldn’t let her write historical fiction the way she wanted, and currently lives in inland southern California with two horses, four dogs, and a collection of barn cats.
