A Civil War romance of the North. Our protagonists are fictional, their bohemian friends historical, their near tragic romance epic. It was an age of change. The last sailing ships were crossing the Atlantic, replaced by steamships. The last limners (itinerant artists) were being replaced by photographers. Puritinism was being replaced by Spiritism and Transcendentalism. Soon slavery would end, not by uniting “black chattel slaves” and factory “wage slaves” into a workers’ union as the Abolitionists intended, but in a brutal war. Please note: this book is over 120,000 words, so you will have three weeks to complete it.

What's this?
It was an age of change. The last sailing ships were crossing the Atlantic, replaced by steamships. The last limners (itinerant artists) were being replaced by photographers. Puritinism was being replaced by Spiritism and Transcendentalism. Soon slavery would end, not by uniting "black chattel slaves" and factory "wage slaves" into a workers' union as the Abolitionists intended, but in a brutal war.
Many of the first self-styled "bohemians" you'll meet are famous (Walt Whitman, Edwin Booth, Mathew Brady) and the Abolitionists still are household names like Harriet Tubman, John Brown, and Henry David Thoreau. Lillian manages to pull bohemian artist and protagonist Wendell into her mysterious involvements.
As a hippie in Greenwich Village in the 1960s, I thought we invented "Free Love" and all the other boho cliches. But when I went in search of the anonymous artist who painted my great-great grandma's portrait in 1860, I found a whole colony of newly minted "bohemians" in Greenwich Village who not only practiced "Free Love" but did everything else besides. And like us, some of them were activists for Civil Rights and subjected to a brutal war. I had to write about it.
