Fifty years after a solar flare killed the world's technology, nuclear submarines rule the sea as Viking longships. They make their own water, air, and power. Everything else they take from the coast.
Felix and Juniper were dragged aboard the USS Groton as slaves and made crew. Felix, a tunnel-born water tester with no gift for violence, turns out to have a talent for tactics despite his best efforts. Juniper fights like she was built for it, and is beginning to learn what being good at killing actually costs.
Then a surprise attack cripples the Groton's reactor. The parts that will save her exist in one place: a dead Naval base miles inland, in country ruled by Sutton Vale — a warlord whose immortality has left him bloated, spore-covered, and greedy.

And all they have to do to keep these unspeakable luxuries is occasionally commit atrocities against people they've never met.
